Tahiti is not only home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, but also to the deadliest wave in the world. They say that hitting the water on this wave is the equivalent of hitting the pavement… the stuff nightmares are made of.
The wave is called “Teahupoo”, it equals other waves like Mavericks or Jaws in height, but it kills them in brute force and power. If that wasn’t bad enough, the wave breaks over only a few feet of water. Just under the surface is a forest of jagged-edged coral ready to tenderize you. It’s taken lives in the past, and just in the last few days it has claimed many surfboards, jet-skis, bones, and a whole lot of flesh.
Last weekend Teahupoo was hit with a major swell and it just happened to be over the time that the Billabong Pro, Taihiti was taking place. The competition was put on hold due to the extreme conditions, but a couple of the crazier surfers couldn’t resist the temptation. This footage is from August 27 on the day that most say is the biggest anyone has ever surfed the wave.
Filmed in HD so you can watch some of the world best surfers wipe in slo mo down the face of this brutal wave in picture perfect quality.
