The Galileo – Competition

It’s a scene i’ve often seen in movies – people camped out on picnic blankets with glasses of wine and awesome food spreads, watching an awesome movie on a screen under the stars at some amazing venue. There’s something about watching a movie under the stars that just makes it a little more special.

The Galileo Open Air Cinema, has brought the concept to Cape Town, and with great success. They’ve used one of the most spectacular natural backdrops we have in our beautiful city – Kirstenbosch Gardens.

Running once a week (usually on Wednesday evenings), from November to April, The Galileo brings you a diversity of film genres in its magical open air setting:

1st week of the month: Documentaries

2nd week of the month: Best Foreign

3rd week of the month: Adventure Sports

4th week of the month: All-Time Classics

Gain free access into Kirstenbosch Gardens (Gate 2) from 6pm on presentation of your movie ticket and enter the Marquee Lawn area where movies are shown. They have a great selection of local food vendors, who offer everything from sandwiches to salads, pies and paellas, there is something for everyone.

You are, of course, welcome to bring your own food and drinks, as well as blankets (which i would recommend having a multitude of, as it’s getting quite cold in the evenings). You can also “rent” blankets and chairs at the venue, which saves you schlepping yours from the car

Kirstenbosch Summer Sunset Concerts 2012/13

Kirstebosch’s popular Sunday concert series is back, and the line up is great as always. Plenty of artists to choose from depending on your music taste. The concerts started on the 25th of Nov, but they run all the way through until the 7th of April 2013.

My favourites are: Yoav & Tailor (30 December 2012),  Toya deLazy (7 January), Goldfish (3 March 2013), Jeremy Loops (10 March 2013) and Shadowclub & Gangs of Ballet (24 March 2013), MiCasa & Natasha Meister (31 March).

It’s pretty hard getting into the Christmas spirit here in Africa, where the weather resembles a postcard from somewhere Tropical rather than a Christmas card. The Carols By Candlelight concerts are always a great way to kickstart that Christmassy feeling in even the most Grinchy of people.

Dates & Times: Every Sunday from 25 November 2011 until 07 April 2012. 5.30pm – 7pm (Gates open at 4pm). Bad weather may cancel.

How to book tickets: Online bookings can be made at www.webtickets.co.za. Redeem your e-ticket at the Kirstenbosch Ticket Office. Over-the-counter tickets go on sale on the Tuesday preceding each concert, from the Visitor’s Centre Ticket Office only. On Sunday tickets will be available at all three entrances. Telephone bookings (021 761 2866) can be made from the Tuesday before each concert, with an administration fee of R10 per ticket applicable.
