Red Bull Illume 2013

Red Bull Illume, the world’s premier international photography competition dedicated to action and adventure sports!

It was created to showcase the most exciting and creative sports photography on the planet and the good news is that submissions are still open! You have until April 30th to enter, so around 6 weeks left.

How rad would it be if there was a South African in the Top 50, maybe even the Top 10? We have some pretty amazing action & adventure sports in South Africa with some of the most beautiful backdrops in the world. RIGHT now – the Absa Cape Epic is underway, i’m sure there are loads of great photo opportunities there!

The Image Quest 2013 will be the 3rd edition of the competition after 2007 and 2010. From tens of thousands of entries, 50 images in ten categories are selected by international judges and photo editors from renowned publications.

The top 50 Red Bull Illume finalists will be invited to attend a grand ceremony in the city of Hong Kong where the winners will be unveiled. Once the winners have been announced these 50 finalist images then travel around the world as a unique and stand-alone photo exhibition. To showcase the illumination, the exhibitions always open at night-time only.

The overall winner of the 2010 Image Quest was Chris Burkard (USA). His image (above) of surfer Peter Mendia riding the waves off Chile’s West Coast won universal praise from the judges.

Keen to enter? Check it: Red Bull Illume 2013

Here are some of the finalists from 2010, across a few of the categories:

This game marks 2013’s first step towards *HOPEFULLY* qualifying for the World Cup in Brazil next year. The tickets are between R50 and R100, and are available at Computicket and Shoprite Checkers stores (as well as the Cape Town Tourism Visitor Information centers).

In January Cape Town hosted Bafana Bafana when they took on Norway in an international friendly as part of their African Cup of Nations preparations. I couldn’t make that game, because i was in the UK, but most of my friends went and they had a blast! The vibe was the closest it has gotten to the World Cup – and it’s sure to be repeated this weekend too!

Holi ONE Festival – Competition

“WE ARE ALL ONE”

Inspired by the original Holi Festival in India, Colour Festivals have travelled around the world to Germany, the USA and Singapore – and now HOLI ONE launches in South Africa for the first time!

If you’re still not quite sure what everyone is going on about – i’ve seen a couple of people on Facebook a little confused. Check the video out below:

CAPE TOWN kicks off the HOLI ONE tour on Sat 2 March, it then moves on to JHB on 6 April, Durban – your date is still to be confirmed! After the South African leg of the journey – these guys follow the Sun and head off to: Berlin, Munich, Bremen, Dusseldorf, Leipzig, Lubeck, and Munster… After that, who knows. They’ve already taken the festival to Ibiza, and Barcelona before!

Holi is a spring festival celebrated by Hindus as a festival of colours. It is primarily observed in India and Nepal but also in Bangladesh and Pakistan. It is also known as Phagwah and Festival of Colours.

PLEASE NOTE RE: THE POWDER:

The powder used at the HOLI ONE Colour Festival is completely safe, non-toxic, water soluble and environmentally friendly and is made from corn flour and food colouring. Only certified 100% natural HOLI ONE powder may be used at the festival. No powder bought outside the festival can be permitted. However, people with allergies, asthma or contact lens wearers should use mouth and/or eye protection.

Personal Advice:

- Wear sunglasses (the bigger the better)

- Keep a handy pack of baby wipes on your person

- Buy a cheap white t-shirt at Pep or wherever

V&A Market On The Wharf – Competition

Who doesn’t love a good market? They’re springing up all over the place as the race to be the best supplier/provider of homegrown/locally produced/organic food.

The truth is that there is still a massive demand for more, all you have to do is take a wander through the Biscuit Mill on a Saturday morning, and you can tell that Capetonians aren’t shy to turn out to support the people who are trying to make food, well… better.

V&A Market on the Wharf is Cape Town, and, South Africa’s latest and most tantalizing fresh food and produce market. The exciting part is that it is open 5 days a week at the Waterfront, their motto: ‘Experience Goodness’.

Indoor

Besides the flavours there’s; a bookshop, ‘Books On The Wharf’, and a demo kitchen, free wifi access in the precinct and a drop, and go collection service, a bar with over 20 local craft beers, Origin Coffee Roasters, and live music.

AND boy do i have good news for you! I’ve been given a hamper by the lovely people from the V&A Market On The Wharf filled with goodies that would make any foodie (or anyone that eats) swoon! Check it:

  • Angus Meats: single smoked chorizo (vacuum packed)
  • Totally Wild Juice
  • Stokkiesdraai Biltong
  • Cape Malay Deli Spices
  • Classic Marmalade and Jam
  • O’ways tea
  • Fudge, Dried Fruit, Chocolates, Olives, Cheese, and more!

How do you win? Make sure you’re following @VA_Market_Wharf AND have liked them on Facebook! All you have to do is tweet:

Hi @StephanieBe and @VA_Market_Wharf, i’d love that hamper of goodness including; biltong, fudge, cheese & more! http://bit.ly/Xj7pd7

PLEASE NOTE: This competition is only open to Cape Town residents and people that will be in town to claim their prize this Saturday at the market.

SNEAK PEAK AT A COMPETITION THIS SATURDAY:

They’ll be running an awesome contest at the market on Saturday where you’ll need to take a pic with a jet pilot and tweet it. You could then win a jet flight over Cape Town for 6 people!  The hashtag you’ll need to use is: #JetSetMarket.

Good luck!

Beer Label Competition

If you follow me on Twitter, or read my blog posts, you should know by now that i am in a FIERCE competition with 9 other bloggers to see who can brew the best beer. At home. This is all happening as a bit of a build up to the Cape Town Festival Of Beer. I dug deep and embraced my inner hillbilly moonshiner and set up the brewery right next to our bed. I kept the beer cold when the weather was hot, and made sure it stayed at the right temperature when it was cold. I’ve added things like cherries and strawberries, honey and love and now it is time to name and clothe it.

What i need from you creative designer types is a name & label design for my beer. For your efforts, you will receive: 4 x tickets to the Cape Town Festival Of Beer, 6 pack Black Label, a couple of bottles of my very own and VERY limited edition home brew beer, and my love & adoration.

It’d be great if the design/name had something to do with me/my blog, etc. There are so many hilarious craft beer labels and brands, but a lot of the time they have no relation to the beer itself or whomever created it. That is why i’m going to try and best describe what i want the label to kind of look like, and if you could try and translate that into a design, that would be lovely ;)

I do a blogpost every Tuesday called “Topless Tuesday” and i was hoping to incorporate this into my beer label design as it has become a really big part of my blog (and solely responsible for my ‘soft core porn mogul’ label). Seeing as you have to be over 18 to drink beer anyway, i figure that boobs on a beer bottle wouldn’t hurt anyone (or get anyone arrested). My initial idea was to have 2 girls on either side of the label, or the same girl just mirrored and then the name of the beer in the middle. The girls can be more Sailor Jerry pinup style or more modern or whatever, i’m open to suggestions. It’d be cool if they weren’t just cartoons/drawings of girls, but actual nekkid girls. With actual nekkid boobs.

The name of the beer is where i’m a little stuck. I wanted to go with STEPH BEer, but i’m not sure how lame that is? I added cherries, honey and strawberries to the beer… so i’m not sure if something clever can be made out of that?

Here are the entries that Nash & Natalie as well as Savage got.

If you have a design for me, you can email it straight through to me: stephaniebarnardt@gmail.com! Closing date for entries: Monday 18 November, 15:00.
